The APPG on Faith and Society welcomed a group of King’s College London students this week for a lively discussion on the role of faith in public life. The visit gave students the chance to hear directly from parliamentary figures about how belief, values and political responsibility intersect — and to put their own questions to the panel.
The session featured contributions from Lord Rees OBE, Sarah Smith MP, Darren Paffey MP and Lord Alderdice. Each speaker reflected on their personal and professional journeys, describing how faith has shaped their motivations, informed their decision‑making, and supported them through the demands of public service.
The students, who are studying Sociology, Politics and Religion, raised thoughtful questions on topics ranging from the tensions that can arise when faith meets politics, to what more faith settings can do to support their local communities.
Overall, the session offered a valuable opportunity for students to engage with experienced politicians, explore the complexities of faith in policymaking, and gain insight into the realities of political life.
